Upper Intermediate Hangi Seviye?

İngilizce dil seviyelerini CEFR standartı, yani “Avrupa Ortak Dil Referansı Çerçevesi” belirlemektedir. Bu standart, İngilizce seviyeleri dünya çapında bireyin İngilizce yeterliliğini tanımlamak için kullanılır, aynı zamanda uluslararası İngilizce dil yeterlilik seviyesini belirleyen sınavlarda da bu standart kullanılır. Referanslarınızda ve özgeçmişlerinizde de seviyenizi A1,A1,B1,B2,C1,C2 şeklinde ekleyebilirsiniz.

Bu seviyeler şu şekilde belirlenmiştir;

Temel kullanıcılar;

• A1 Başlangıç (Beginner)
• A2 Temel (Elementary)

Bağımsız kullanıcılar;

• B1 Orta Seviye Öncesi (Pre-Intermediate)
• B2 Orta Üstü Seviye (Intermediate)

Yetkin kullanıcılar;

• C1 İleri Seviye (Upper-Intermediate)
• C2 Profesyonel İleri Seviye (Advanced)

Gördüğünüz gibi Upper-Intermediate seviyesi yetkin İngilizce kullanımı kategorisi altındadır ve Orta Üstü seviyeden hemen sonra gelir. Avrupa standartlarına bakıldığında B2 ve C1 arasında geçiş çok ince bir çizgidedir bu nedenle bu seviye bazen B2 olarak da kabul edilebilir.

Upper-Intermediate seviyesine geldiğinizde önemli olan nokta birçok aksan ve konuşmayı rahatlıkla anlayıp dinleme becerileriniz üst seviyeye ulaşmış olmasıdır. Aynı zamanda okuduğunuz çoğu şeyi anlar konuma gelip İngilizceyi akademik olarak kullanma yolunda ilerlemiş olursunuz. Yaptığınız gramer hatalarının farkına rahatlıkla varabilirsiniz, anlamını bilmediğiniz kelimeler sadece sıklıkla kullanılmayan kelimeler olur. Fakat bu kelimelerin de anlamlarını metin içinde bulunduğu konumdan rahatlıkla çıkarabilir hale gelmişsinizdir.

Yani kısacası Upper-Intermediate seviyesine geldiğinizce İngilizceyi zorlanmadan anlayabilir ve kendinizi rahatlıkla ifade ederek konuşabilir konuma gelmiş olursunuz. Bu noktada günlük hayatta ihtiyaç duyduğunuz İngilizceyi tamamen biliyorsunuzdur.

Upper-Intermediate Seviyesine Nasıl Gelinir?

Upper-Intermediate İngilizce dil seviyeleri arasında seviyesi Orta Üstü Düzeyden sonra gelinen seviyedir. Yukarıda da açıkladığımız gibi bu noktada İngilizcenin neredeyse geneline hakim olmuş durumundasınızdır.

Peki Intermediate seviyesinden Upper-Intermediate seviyesine geçmek için ne yapmalı? Bu iki seviye arasındaki fark aslında İngilizceyi nerede ve nasıl kullandığınızla ortaya çıkıyor. Eğer İngilizceyi yetkin bir şekilde kullanmaya başladıysanız Upper-Intermediate olarak kabul edilirsiniz, yani akademik olarak, işinizde ya da herhangi bir ortak dil olarak İngilizce kullanılan bir toplulukta İngilizceyi kullanıyorsanız Upper-Intermeadiate seviyesine gelmişsiniz demektir.

İngilizcenizi Upper-Intermediate seviyesine getirebilmek için aşağıdaki konuları göz önünde bulundurabilirsiniz;

• Gramer konularında kendinizi geliştirmelisiniz ve artık bunları bir kalıba oturtmak yerine doğaçlama şekilde yapabiliyor olmalısınız.
• Karşınızdakiyle iletişimde hiçbir sıkıntı yaşamamak adına hem yazılı olarak hem de konuşma olarak kendinizi geliştirmelisiniz. Konuşma çalışması yaparken not aldığınız cümleleri ya da aklınızda kalmasını istediğiniz kelimelerin cümleleştirilmiş hallerini ayna karşısında çalışarak telaffuzunuzu da güçlendirebilirsiniz. Bu alıştırma aynı zamanda özgüveninizin artmasını da sağlar.
• İzlediğiniz İngilizce dizi, film ya da belgeselleri artık altyazısız bir şekilde izlemeye başlamalısınız. Upper-Intermediate seviyesine gelindiğinde her aksanı rahatlıkla anlayabliyor olmanız gerekmektedir, bu nedenle de kulağınızı duyarak anlamaya alıştırmalısınız.
• Gramer konusuna gelince passive voice kullanımını ya da noun clauses, relative clauses ve if clauses gibi konuların kullanımını rahatlıkla yapabiliyor olmalısınız. Unutmayın ki Upper-Intermediate seviyesine gelindiğinde İngilizce zamanlar gibi gramer konularının hepsini bilmeniz ve ayırt edebiliyor olmanız gerekmektedir.
• Bağlaçların etkili bir şekilde kullanımını öğrenip bunları yazı içinde ya da konuşma içinde kullanabiliyor olmalısınız. (although, as soon as, when, however, just as, even if, by the time, while, in order to, that, or, but, so, yet, for, whereas ya da neither..nor.., not only..but also.., either..or.. gibi)
• Indirect questions, reported speech ve inversion (devrik cümle kurma) gibi gramer konularına da çalışmanız gerekmektedir.
• Akademik düzeye geçiş aşaması olduğu için makaleler üzerinde çalışmalar ve okumalar yapılabilir. Bu sayede hem kelime dağarcığınız hem de gramer bilginiz gelişir. Gramer bilginizi sadece kurallar üzerinde çalışarak geliştirebileceğiniz bir şey olarak görmemelisiniz. Bir metni okuduğunuzda orada bulunan yapılar da size gramer öğretir ve aklınızda kalmasına yardımcı olur.
• Makaleler dışında uzun soluklu romanlar da okunmaya başlanabilir. Anlamını bilmediğiniz her kelimeye bakmak yerine context içinden bu kelimenin anlamını anlayabiliyor olmanız gerekmektedir, bu yönde çalışmalar yapmak İngilizcenizi geliştirecektir.

Upper-Intermediate Anlamı

Upper-Intermediate seviyesi bazı kaynaklarda “Orta Üstü Seviye” olarak belirtilirken bazı kaynaklarda ise “İleri Seviye” olarak ele alınmaktadır. Bu seviyenin asıl belirtmek istediği anlam ise yetkin olarak İngilizceyi kullanmaya başlamış olmanızdır.

Kısacası, eğer yetkin bir İngilizce kullanıcısı iseniz Upper-Intermediate seviyesine gelmişsinizdir. Bu seviyeden bir sonraki seviye ise “Advanced” seviyedir; advanced seviyede İngilizceye tamamen hakim olarak kabul edilirsiniz ve sizin ikinci diliniz olarak görülür, ana dili İngilizce olan biri kadar konuşabiliyorsunuzdur ve akademik İngilizce kullanabiliyorsunuz demektir.

Upper-Intermediate seviyesi günlük İngilizcenin tamamen çözüldüğü ve akademik İngilizceye adım atıldığı noktadır.

Upper-Intermediate Reading (Orta Üstü İngilizce Okuma)

Upper-Intermediate seviyesinde ünlü yazarların kısa öykülerinin okumasını yaparak hem eğlenceli hem de öğretici bir deneyim yaşayabilirsiniz.

Bu noktada dikkat etmeniz gereken şey kısa öyküyü okurken her bilmediğiniz kelimede öyküyü okumayı yarıda bırakıp sözlükten bakmamanızdır. Eğer okumayı yarıda bırakırsanız öykünün akışından çıkarsınız ve sadece kelimeye odaklanırsınız, bu şekilde daha sonra ne kelime aklınızda kalır ne de öyküyü okurken edindiğiniz diğer kelimeler, gramer yapıları ya da öykünün anlatmak istediği şey.

Öyküyü okurken eğer bilmediğiniz bir kelime varsa olabildiğince yazının akışından ve kelimenin cümledeki konumundan çıkarmaya çalışınız. Eğer öykü bitiğinde hala o kısmı anlamamışsanız geri dönüp bu sefer anlamına bakabilirsiniz. Bu nedenle kısa öykü okumak size hem zevk verecek hem de öğretecek bir aktivite haline dönüşür.

Bir örnek olarak Viginia Woolf’un “A Haunted House” adlı kısa öyküsünü okuyabiliriz;

Whatever hour you woke there was a door shunting. From room to room
they went, hand in hand, lifting here, opening there, making sure—a
ghostly couple.
“Here we left it,” she said. And he added, “Oh, but here too!” “It’s upstairs,” she murmured. “And in the garden,” he whispered “Quietly,”
they said, “or we shall wake them.”
But it wasn’t that you woke us. Oh, no. “They’re looking for it; they’re
drawing the curtain,” one might say, and so read on a page or two. “Now
they’ve found it,” one would be certain, stopping the pencil on the margin. And then, tired of reading, one might rise and see for oneself, the
house all empty, the doors standing open, only the wood pigeons bubbling with content and the hum of the threshing machine sounding from
the farm. “What did I come in here for? What did I want to find?” My
hands were empty. “Perhaps it’s upstairs then?” The apples were in the
loft. And so down again, the garden still as ever, only the book had
slipped into the grass.
But they had found it in the drawing room. Not that one could ever
see them. The window panes reflected apples, reflected roses; all the
leaves were green in the glass. If they moved in the drawing room, the
apple only turned its yellow side. Yet, the moment after, if the door was
opened, spread about the floor, hung upon the walls, pendant from the
ceiling—what? My hands were empty. The shadow of a thrush crossed
the carpet; from the deepest wells of silence the wood pigeon drew its
bubble of sound. “Safe, safe, safe,” the pulse of the house beat softly. “The
treasure buried; the room… ” the pulse stopped short. Oh, was that the
buried treasure?
A moment later the light had faded. Out in the garden then? But the
trees spun darkness for a wandering beam of sun. So fine, so rare, coolly
sunk beneath the surface the beam I sought always burnt behind the
glass. Death was the glass; death was between us; coming to the woman
first, hundreds of years ago, leaving the house, sealing all the windows;
the rooms were darkened. He left it, left her, went North, went East, saw
the stars turned in the Southern sky; sought the house, found it dropped
beneath the Downs. “Safe, safe, safe,” the pulse of the house beat gladly.
“The Treasure yours.”
The wind roars up the avenue. Trees stoop and bend this way and
that. Moonbeams splash and spill wildly in the rain. But the beam of the
lamp falls straight from the window. The candle burns stiff and still.
Wandering through the house, opening the windows, whispering not to
wake us, the ghostly couple seek their joy. “Here we slept,” she says. And he adds, “Kisses without number.”
“Waking in the morning—” “Silver between the trees—” “Upstairs—” “In
the garden—” “When summer came—” “In winter snowtime—” The
doors go shutting far in the distance, gently knocking like the pulse of a
heart.
Nearer they come; cease at the doorway. The wind falls, the rain slides
silver down the glass. Our eyes darken; we hear no steps beside us; we
see no lady spread her ghostly cloak. His hands shield the lantern.
“Look,” he breathes. “Sound asleep. Love upon their lips.”
Stooping, holding their silver lamp above us, long they look and
deeply. Long they pause. The wind drives straightly; the flame stoops
slightly. Wild beams of moonlight cross both floor and wall, and, meeting, stain the faces bent; the faces pondering; the faces that search the
sleepers and seek their hidden joy.

he sighs. “Again you found me.” “Here,” she murmurs, “sleeping; in the
